Academic And Cultural Center San Pablo

At the heart of the city of Oaxaca and located between Independencia and Hidalgo Avenues of historic center, a historic building has come to life now become the Academic and Cultural Center San Pablo, a place where after a laborious process of recovery and restoration driven by Alfredo Harp Helú Foundation Oaxaca (FAHHO) and Maria Isabel Grañén Porrúa, president of the Foundation “Alfredo Harp Helu,” which for over 400 years resisted fragmentation and architectural distortion and even spaces have been split in two for opening Fiallo Street, where the past mingles with pride of contemporary architecture.

In the process of the work it was restored the Rosary Chapel, whose stained glass is the work of Maestro Francisco Toledo, it found a house foundation, pottery, remains of two human burials dating back more than two thousand years.

The former convent of Santo Domingo de Soriano, better known as San Pablo, was the first built by the Dominicans in Oaxaca, founded in 1529 and remained hidden under thousands of tons of cement and ignored stories like the walls of a church and columns of the cloister, waiting to be discovered.

The achievements of this project are different, especially very important to rescue the old alley that runs through the building of Independence and Hidalgo Avenues which enters the churchyard, a passage full of mysticism and history.

Among them also the rescue of a convent who was blind to the appreciation of people from Oaxaca, commissioning public use of a capital asset through a cultural and academic center, but above all, be a place for thinking and social interaction. This will be a place that is dedicated to reflect and understand the complexity and depth of Indian heritage, which in Oaxaca felt everywhere.

Based on the view that art and culture are intrinsically linked to sustainable development, both economically and environmentally, the former convent of San Pablo has been built considering catchment systems for rainwater and photocells, to harness solar energy.
