One of the most colorful and ethnic celebrations of America, and the most important celebration in Oaxaca is “La Guelaguetza”, well known as Lunes del Cerro Celebration. The festival, as known today, is the result of mixed races between indigenous culture and Spanish culture, which arrived in Mexico in sixteenth century.
The Guelaguetza defines people from Oaxaca, from historical times until today and legacy from every corner of the cultural mosaic of this state, an event that will leave a deep impression on him that has a chance to live it.
The word itself has its origin in Zapoteco; it means “reciprocal exchange of gifts and services” and it refers to relationships that join together people. These relationships serve to create a cooperation bond between individual families and even between towns and counties.
In this celebration takes part folkloric groups of eight regions of Oaxaca: La Costa Chica, Cañada, Papaloapan, La Mixteca, Sierra Sur, Sierra Norte, Central Valley and Istmo of Tehuantepec, each region shows the most valuable of their traditions and cultural heritage through dance, music, songs and costumes.
