XIII Tejate Festival in San Andrés Huayapam, Oaxaca, Mexico
San Andres Huayapam is a village by the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. It is home to the old drink of the gods “The Tejate”. The community of San Andres Huayapam is located 5 km away from Oaxaca City and the travel time is 30 to 40 minutes.
Huayapam means in Nahuatl “On the Sea” and comes from the words “Hueyatl” meaning “sea” and “Pam” meaning “on”. It is just a commemorative name as this place because it is located far away from the sea.
San Andres Huayapam is renowned for preserve in its food a delicious drink made with corn and cocoa, which is made for thousands of years and residents have named as a drink of the gods. Although “The Tejate” is made in several communities, San Andres Huayapam is the birth place and the women who made it give a unique flavor that you cannot find anywhere else.
In traditional Tejate fair held during the Holy week, it will taste Oaxacan dishes like “empanadas”, “tlayudas”, and mole like black mole, chichilo with yerba santa leaves, memelitas, horchata water, chilacayota, pulque and mescal. We also find Oaxaca sweets and ice cream of different flavors.
The fair takes place on April 1, from 10:00 hrs., in San Andres Huayapam.
